The SMARTER Center develops transportation technologies that address safety and mobility gaps in the transportation network. Each is built and tested by Center researchers, protected through the patent process, and moved toward real-world deployment with agency and industry partners. View some of our select research products below.
The Autonomous Wheelchair
The Autonomous Wheelchair uses machine learning and onboard sensors to navigate busy transportation hubs without an attendant, giving travelers with disabilities independent mobility through crowded public spaces. The technology is patented and has undergone pilot testing at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
Bear Alert
Bear Alert is a work zone safety system that warns highway workers when a vehicle approaches erratically. A portable LiDAR detection kit tracks vehicle speed and trajectory, then triggers visual, audible, and haptic alerts through a worker-worn device. The system has been piloted on Hillen Road in Baltimore.
Blind Spot Warning with Hedging
Blind Spot Warning with Hedging alerts passenger vehicle drivers when they enter the blind spots of a large truck, closing a gap left by conventional systems that warn only the truck operator. The patented technology operates in a connected vehicle environment and is moving toward real-world implementation.
